Salt Lake City International Airport (776 N. Terminal Dr., 801/575-2400, www.slcairport.com ) is conveniently located seven miles west of downtown; take North Temple or I-80 to reach it. All major U.S. carriers fly into Salt Lake City . Salt Lake City is the western hub for Delta Air Lines, the region's air transport leader.
The airport has three terminals; in each you'll find a ground-transportation information desk, a cafeteria, motel/hotel courtesy phones, auto rentals (Hertz, Avis, National, Budget, and Dollar), and a ski-rental shop. Terminal 1 also houses Zion's First National Bank (currency exchange), an ice-cream parlor, and gift shops.
Utah Information Centers (801/575-2800) are found in Terminals 1 and 2. Terminal 3 is dedicated to foreign arrivals and departures.
Staff at the ground-transportation information desks will know the bus schedules into town and can advise on limousine services direct to Park City , Sundance, Provo, Ogden, Brigham City, Logan, and other communities. UTA Bus #50 is the cheapest way into town. It leaves the airport daily (except holidays) every hour from about 6:30 a.m. to about 11:30 p.m. (less frequently and only to about 5:30 p.m. on Sun.).
Amtrak trains (information and reservations 340 South 600 West, 800/872-7245, www.amtrak.com ) stop at the "Intermodal Hub," which also serves as a terminus for local buses and commuter trains. The only Amtrak train that currently passes through the city is the California Zephyr, which heads west to Reno and Oakland and east to Denver and Chicago four times a week.
Call for fares, as Amtrak prices tickets as airlines do, with advance-booking discounts, special seasonal prices, and other special rates available. Amtrak office hours (timed to meet the trains) are irregular, so call first.
Salt Lake City  sits at a crossroads of several major freeways and has good Greyhound bus service (300 South 600 West, 801/355-9579 or 800/231-2222, www.greyhound.com ). Generally speaking, buses go north and south along I-15 and east and west along I-80. One bus daily leaves from Salt Lake City for Yellowstone National Park  (summer only).
Utah Transit Authority (UTA, 801/287-4636, www.rideuta.com , 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Mon.-Sat.) provides inexpensive bus and light rail train service in town and to the airport, the University of Utah , and surrounding communities. Buses go as far north as Ogden, as far south as Provo and Springville, and as far west as Tooele. TRAX light rail trains connect the EnergySolutions Arena, the University of Utah, downtown Salt Lake City, and the southern suburbs. No charge is made for travel downtown within the "Free-Fare Square" area (bounded by North Temple St., 400 South, West Temple St., and 200 East).
During the winter ski season, skiers can hop on the Ski Bus Service to Solitude , Brighton , Snowbird , and Alta ski areas  from downtown, the University of Utah, and other locations. A bus route map and individual schedules are available online and at the ground transportation information desk at the airport, at the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau downtown, and at Temple Square visitor centers . Free transfers are given on request when the fare is paid.
On Sunday, only the airport, Ogden, Provo, and a few other destinations are served. UTA shuts down on holidays. Fares are $2.25 for two hours of travel on both TRAX or the buses; a day pass is $5.50.
All the major companies and many local outfits are eager to rent you a set of wheels. In winter you can find "skierized" vehicles with snow tires and ski racks ready to head for the slopes.
