Bicycles are allowed on all paved and dirt roads on the South Rim [1] and North Rim [2]. However, many park roads are narrow and curving, and traffic is heavy, especially on summer weekends. Wear a helmet and bright colors, use hand signals, and ride single-file in the same direction as traffic. In Arizona, bikes are subject to the same traffic rules as automobiles. The South Rim’s free shuttle buses will accommodate bikes.

All hiking trails inside the park are off-limits to bicycles, with two exceptions. On the North Rim, cyclists can use The Bridle Path [3]. On the South Rim, The Greenway is open to bicycles. The Greenway is a walking and cycling path that connects the historic village area with the Grand Canyon Visitors Center and plaza. Another Greenway segment begins at the Abyss overlook on Hermit Road.

Outside park boundaries in Kaibab National Forest, traffic is much lighter. Dirt and gravel forest roads offer miles of shady rides on the canyon’s north and south sides, some with canyon views. In the North Kaibab, Forest Roads 610 and 611 take you to the edge of the Kaibab Plateau [4] for views of the eastern canyon and Marble Platform, with links to a 22-mile section of the Arizona Trail. Just a few miles from the park boundaries near Grandview Point [5], forest roads travel to historic Hull Cabin, the Grandview Lookout tower, and the Moqui Stage Station, with distant canyon views from the Coconino Rim.
