Distance: 2 miles round-trip
Duration: 1 hour
Elevation gain: 500 feet
Effort: Easy
Trailhead: River left, mile 93
The trail to Monument Creek begins at the mouth of Monument Canyon, above Granite Rapids, where many river trips camp or pull out to scout the challenging rapids. This hike’s highlight is the tall spire that gives Monument Canyon its name.
From the river, it’s 0.75 miles to the narrows that loop around the monument to the left. You can rejoin the main canyon by climbing out of the narrows, then following a small drainage to complete the loop around this pinnacle and back down to the creek bed before hiking out.
Those who want a longer hike can continue on the Monument Trail, which joins the Tonto Trail [1] 1.5 miles from the river. From the junction, you’ll have a raven’s-eye view of the monument.
