Scenic Highway 67 crosses the Kaibab Plateau [1] on its way from Jacob Lake to Bright Angel Point [2], the heart of the North Rim. The drive, almost 50 miles, is a lovely trip through grassy meadows edged by forests of pine and aspen.
If you’re traveling this route in the early morning or evening, you might see deer or elk grazing in the meadows, or a pack of coyotes wandering near the edge of a pond. Even bison have been spotted on these grassy expanses.
Paved turnouts are a good place to stop and watch the action with a pair of binoculars. The developed area of Bright Angel Point is perched on the plateau’s southern edge.
Outside park boundaries, the plateau is crisscrossed by forest roads, many of them suitable for passenger cars. Pine- and aspen-shaded glens make inviting picnic spots or primitive campsites.
On the east side of the plateau, forest overlooks like Dog Point and East Rim Viewpoint provide access to the Arizona Trail and panoramas of the Saddle Mountain Wilderness and Marble Platform.
On the west, Timp, Parissawampitts, and other points overlook the rocky platform known as the Tapeats Amphitheater.
