The island has a few galleries and shops catering to the summer crowd. One of the best places to poke around is Artisan Books & Bindery (509 Pendleton Point Rd., 207/734-6852, www.artisanbooksandbindery.,com), where proprietor Craig Olson stocks a variety of used and rare books, as well as new books by Maine [1] and Islesboro [2] authors (yes, there are some). Be sure to call ahead, as the store’s official hours are “by appointment or chance.”

Italian pottery, jewelry, and Maine-made crafts are part of the selection at Hummingbird Hill (1109 Meadow Pond Rd., 207/734-8193, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. daily), a small but delightful gift shop.
