The Mount Washington area has the best climbing in the east, centered around Cathedral and Whitehorse Ledges, two sheer granite cliffs that face Route 16 just beyond North Conway. Together they present an amazing variety of climbs, as well as plenty of elbow room to do it in.
Even if you’ve never seen a carabiner, the folks at EMS Climbing School (1498 White Mountain Hwy./Rte. 16, North Conway, 800/310-4504, www.emsclimb.com [1]) will hook you up for a climb up Cathedral. The school is located in North Conway behind Walgreen’s and next to the Eastern Mountain Sports store. It also runs trips up more secluded faces along the Kancamagus Highway [2] and up the sides of Mount Washington for more experienced climbers.
