The first permanent settlers arrived in Hanover in 1765, four years before Dartmouth College [1] was established. Today, it’s difficult to separate the two; the college is the town’s main source for economy and attention, and the town is considered by the college to practically be an extension of its campus and an invaluable resource for its students (perhaps because it provides students something to do besides cow-tipping).
And indeed, there is plenty to do and see around town, from shopping to loafing around in the cafés on Main Street. That’s equally true of nearby Lebanon: Even with about 13,000 residents and a regional airport, the town’s covered bridges and back roads still give it an air of village-meets-urban life.
