A strange, yet strangely affecting, tribute to American war dead in the middle of the New Hampshire [1] countryside, this “cathedral” (10 Hale Hill Rd., Rindge, 603/899-3300, www.cathedralofthepines.org [2], 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily May–Oct., free) has pine trees for walls and the open sky for a ceiling.
Around the grove of soaring trees are various altars and structures that pay homage to fallen soldiers, including a tall bell tower that honors women who have died in war (on its sides are several bas-reliefs designed by Norman Rockwell). Another altar has stones contributed by every U.S. president since Harry Truman.
