Greater New Haven

The city of New Haven [1] is surrounded by a thriving area of quiet bedroom communities proud of their history and culture. This was one of the first areas of Connecticut [2] to be settled, and residents have taken pride in retaining and restoring its many historic buildings.

The presence of New Haven and Yale [3] adds to the sophistication of the area, with many fine restaurants and boutiques nestled in the salt marshes.

Getting to New Haven

A half dozen daily flights from Philadelphia [4] arrive at Tweed New Haven Regional Airport (155 Burr St., New Haven, 203/466-8833, www.flytweed.com [5]), which also offers seasonal flights to Orlando, Florida. Both Amtrak (800/872-7245, www.amtrak.com [6]) and Metro North (800/638-7646, www.mta.nyc.ny.us [7]) run trains to and from Union Station (50 Union Ave.); Greyhound (203/772-2470, www.greyhound.com [8]) and Peter Pan Bus Lines (800/343-9999, www.peterpanbus.com [9]) provide bus routes to the same location.

The New Haven regional service of CT Transit (203/624-0151, www.cttransit.com [10]) operates buses around the city and immediate suburbs. Milford Transit (203/874-4507, www.ci.milford.ct.us [11]) runs shuttle buses around the town of Milford. The Shore Line East (800/255-7433, www.shorelineeast.com [12]) commuter rail service runs trains to Guilford, Brandon, and other eastern suburbs, continuing on to New London [13].
