The re-created Olde Mistick Village (at exit 90 off I-95, 860/536-4941, www.oldemystickvillage.com [1], 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Sat.; 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Sun.; extended hours in summer) is more Disneyland fantasy than actual history, but it serves to get visitors into the spirit of the Seaport. Stroll past clusters of touristy shops selling souvenirs, plus some filled with genuinely unique crafts (hand-knit scarves, painted furnishings, and the like). With several decent restaurants and pretty gardens, the center makes for a full afternoon for families (of which there are loads here).
If you’re feeling inspired by the water’s proximity, you’re not alone. So are the owners of Cutwater Gallery (14 Holmes, 860/572-1576, 12 p.m.–5 p.m. Wed.–Sat., or by appointment), a space dedicated entirely to art (fine and otherwise) and gifts that depict fishing and/or nautical life.
