Historic New England throws open the grounds of Roseland Cottage each October for its annual Fine Arts and Craft Festival (860/974-3020, 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m., mid-Oct.), which features original works by some 175 artisans.

Many communities take pride in the age of their county fair, but the Brooklyn Fair (860/779-0012, www.brooklynfair.org [1], 4–11 p.m. Thu.; 8 a.m.–11 p.m. Fri.–Sat., late Aug.., $10, free children under 13) is actually the oldest continuous agricultural fair in the country. The fair, which includes midway rides and livestock displays, has been active since 1809.
