Providence’s [1] early prosperity may have started with the role its wharf played in the slave and rum trades, but it was secured a few miles northeast in Pawtucket [2] and Woonsocket [3], by the success of the industrial forerunners who founded the area’s mill communities around the Blackstone River’s rushing waters.
