Some of the best summer Shakespeare in the country is performed by Shakespeare & Company (70 Kemble St., 413/637-1199, www.shakespeare.org [1], free–$60), which performs in an air-conditioned scaffold-and-canvas theater. In addition to plays by the Bard, the company also stages premieres by area playwrights and special events, such as one-acts by Edith Wharton or interpretations of Edgar Allen Poe stories by actor F. Murray Abraham. The company is in the process of an ambitious plan to build a replica of the 1587 Rose Playhouse, surrounded by a mock-Elizabethan village.
