One of Boston University’s most modern dorms is converted during the summer into the Fenway Summer Hostel (610 Beacon St., 617/267-8599, www.bostonhostel.org [1], single $100, quad $34.45–45), one of the nicest hostels you are likely to find anywhere. Basic rooms each contain just three beds, as well as a writing desk.
French wallpaper, tasseled lampshades, and marble mantels are just some of the details that make 
Gryphon House (9 Bay State Rd., 617/375-9003, www.gryphonhouseboston.com [2], $189–365) a favorite place for returning visitors. A Victorian townhouse tucked into the back of Kenmore Square, the hotel has eight rooms, each with a different personality, including the sunny garden room and neo-Gothic sanctuary.
