San Antonio’s [1] conjunto clubs, which specialize in accordion-based Tejano dance music, are typically found in neighborhood bars which appear unassuming during the week but get mighty spicy on weekend nights. In fact, two of the city’s most popular venues are sports bars that just happen to have large dance floors and disco balls for the occasion.
One of the best known is Arturo’s Sports Bar & Grill (3310 S. Zarzamora St., 210/923-0177), which features local and regional bands most weekend nights.
Another is Reptilez Sports Club (5418 W. Old U.S. Hwy. 90, 210/433-5552), where conjunto reigns on Sunday, thanks to the bouncy beats of house band Fred Saldana y Los Camaroneros.
Other established venues include the tiny yet colorful Salute! (2801 N. St. Mary’s St., 210/732-5307, www.saluteinternationalbar.com [2]) and Lerma’s (1602 N. Zarzamora St., 210/732-0477).
