Spanning 178 acres of rolling Texas prairie on the edge of the Hill Country [1], the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center (4801 LaCrosse Ave., 512/292-4200, www.wildflower.org [2], 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Tues.–Sat., noon–5 p.m. Sun., $7 adults, $6 seniors and students, $3 children 5–12) is well worth the 30-minute drive south of town. The Wildflower Center is a Central Texas treasure exploding with iridescent colors, especially in the spring.
Native flowers, bushes, trees, and grasses exhibit the region’s natural beauty in numerous gardens and trails throughout a sprawling meadow, and an interpretive center and signage convey the passion Lady Bird (LBJ’s wife) had for Texas’s natural resources and educating people about the state’s abundant botanical blessings.
