Heading out from Albuquerque [1], I-40 climbs the West Mesa and heads dead straight across a plateau lined with flat mesas—archetypal Southwest scenery. Although it’s somewhat dull freeway driving, the trip out this way is well worth it, as ancient Acoma Pueblo [2] is built on top of one of these mesas, an amazing place to visit and meet the people whose ancestors have lived here for nearly a thousand years.
