On Gold Avenue at 3rd Street, this one-story office building is another of Albuquerque’s gems. With its curlicued facade of white ceramic tile, the ornate 1917 construction looks like the Doge’s Palace in Venice rendered in marshmallow fluff.
After a 1933 fire, the reconstructing architects added even more frills, such as the crenellations along the top.
The entire building is surfaced in white terra-cotta; the tiles were made in a factory in Denver, which sprayed the ceramic glaze onto concrete blocks, each individually molded and numbered; the blocks were then assembled in Albuquerque [1] according to an overall plan.
