Tucked away in a side alley off the main street, this tiny adobe chapel (404 San Felipe Rd. NW) is dedicated to the first saint of Mexico; her image dominates the wall facing the entrance.
The dimly lit room, furnished only with heavy carved seats against the walls, is still in regular use, and the air is sweet with the smell of votive candles and milagros placed at Mary’s feet and on the modest altar, along with prayers and testimonies.
Despite the building’s small scale, it follows the scheme of many traditional New Mexican churches, with a clerestory that allows sunlight to shine down on the altar.
