Business turnover can be high in Red River [1], and it’s hard to recommend reliable options. Your choices, for the most part, are burgers and barbecue.
If you’re hungrier for spicy New Mexican, hold out till Questa [2]. The town’s most legendary eatery is Texas Reds (111 E. Main St., 575/754-2964, 5–9 p.m. daily, $18), though it’s open only for dinner.
If The Hole Thing (601 W. Main St., 575/754-2342, 6:30–11 a.m. daily, $1) is still open (it was changing hands in 2008), stop in for an apple fritter or a cinnamon roll, so delicious that a bear once broke in and ate a whole tray.
Otherwise, Old Tymer’s Café (210 E. Main St., 575/754-2951, 9 a.m.–9 p.m. daily, $7) is reliable, if not ground-breaking.
