From popular sport-climbing spots such as the basalt Dead Cholla Wall in the Rio Grande Gorge [1] to the more traditional routes at Tres Piedras [2], Taos is a climber’s dream.
One of the most impressive pitches is at Questa Dome, north of Taos on Highway 378, where the flawless granite on the Questa Direct route is graded 5.10 and 5.11. And you’re not limited to the summer, as winter sees some terrific ice climbs at higher elevations.
Taos Mountain Outfitters (111 S. Plaza, 575/758-9292, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Sun.) can provide maps, ropes, and more details.
For climbing lessons or guided tours, contact Mountain Skills (575/776-2222, www.climbingschoolusa.com [3]) in Arroyo Seco [4].
