An Army Corps of Engineers dam project created this 4,000-acre lake with fingers running into the canyons all around. The view coming in is marred by the power station, but past that the water glimmers at the base of the flat-topped flint mountain Pedernal Peak, the distinctive silhouette that found its way into so many of O’Keeffe’s paintings. (“It’s my private mountain,” she often said. “God told me if I painted it often enough, I could have it.”) The overly paved campsites ($5) at the lake are open year-round, but water ($10) and electric hookups ($14) are available only in the summer.
