No, you haven’t made a wrong turn—you’re still in Española [1]. This adobe trading post (110 Sandia Dr., 505/753-9414, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Mon.–Sat.) on the west side of the main highway relocated here in the 1930s after several decades at its original location in Chimayó.
Now it’s a listed landmark, as one of the last remaining trading posts from the frontier days, and it has everything you’d expect: creaky wood floors, dim lighting, and a jumbled stock of treasures that includes not only Chimayó rugs but also ones from Iran; Nepalese silver jewelry; cut-tin candleholders, made locally; long skeins of handmade wool yarn; Edith Piaf 45s; postcards; and even free coffee.
The inventory is so diverse because the elderly owner who has tended it for the past few decades with his partner was one of the original generation of jet-setters. The two worked for PanAm and Air France and picked up goodies on all their travels. You could easily spend hours in here.
