All things Texan are the specialty at The Cowgirl (319 S. Guadalupe St., 505/982-2565, 11 a.m.–midnight Mon.–Fri., 11:30 a.m.–midnight Sat., 8 a.m.–11 p.m. Sun., $13), a kitsch-filled spot that’s as friendly to kids as it is to margarita-guzzling, rib-gnawing adults. Mesquite-smoked brisket is popular, as is the chicken-fried steak. Non-meat-eaters won’t feel left out: An ooey-gooey butternut squash casserole comes with a salad on the side. Both carnivores and veggies should save room for pineapple upside-down cake and the ice-cream “baked potato.”
