Mountain bikers have fantastic outlets very close to Santa Fe [1], while those who prefer the open road will love the challenges in the winding highways through the mountains north of the city.

Rob & Charlie’s (1632 St. Michael’s Dr., 505/471-9119, 9:30 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Sat.) is a reliable shop for road bikers, and closer to the plaza, Mellow Velo (638 Old Santa Fe Tr., 505/995-8356, 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Sun.) is a good friendly shop downtown that rents both mountain and road models and also runs shuttles and tours. The shop is closed Sundays in the winter and open later during the summer—it’s best to call ahead.
