Dedicated rail fans, and anyone wanting a break from a drive, will want to head out to this tiny settlement southeast of Santa Fe [1]—the Amtrak train lets passengers off at a lone depot.

Parked on the tracks outside, the Lamy Station Café (505/466-1904, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Wed.–Fri., 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. Sat., 9:30 a.m.–3 p.m. Sun., $8) occupies a vintage dining car, complete with a mod mauve-and-turquoise color scheme and loads of chrome; the menu is American standards, such as a delicious pulled-pork sandwich.

Just across the street, the old Legal Tender Saloon is now the Lamy Railroad & History Museum (505/466-3519, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Fri.–Sun. June–Aug., $2). It’s worth a visit just for its glam wood interior, dating from 1881; the bar was imported from Bavaria.
