The Fernwood Resort (Hwy. 1, 831/667-2422, www.fernwoodbigsur.com [1]) maintains a large campground area on both sides of the Big Sur River. You can choose between pitching your own tent, pulling in in an RV, or renting a tent cabin.
The resort has easy access to the river, where you can swim, inner tube, and hike. You’ll also have access to the restaurant, store, and tavern.
Tent cabins offer small canvas-constructed spaces with room for four in a double and two twins. You can pull your car right up to the back of your cabin. Bring your own linens or sleeping bags, pillows, and towels to make up the inside of your tent cabin. Hot showers and bathrooms are a short walk away.
Tent campsites are scattered in great places—tucked in down by the river under vast shady redwood trees. You can even park your RV under a tree, then hook it up to water and electricity.
