When Santa Cruz [1] locals who love their sushi get that craving for raw fish, they head for Shogun Sushi (1123 Pacific Ave., 831/469-4477, Mon.–Wed. 5–9 p.m., Thurs.–Fri. 5–10 p.m., Sat. 3–10 p.m.). Right on the Pacific Garden Mall [2], Shogun serves big fresh slabs of nigiri and an interesting collection of maki (rolls).
The fish served here is some of the freshest you’ll find in this seacoast city. Their meats and other dishes also please diners with fresh ingredients and tasty preparations. While service can be spotty, usually it’s efficient—you’ll get your order quickly and it will be right on.
If you’re not used to sushi prices, you may find Shogun expensive, but if you’re a connoisseur you’ll feel that they’re quite reasonable. Do be aware that there’s often a wait for a table in the evenings, especially on weekends.
