This 15-mile scenic drive takes you out away from the high-traffic tourist areas of the Eastern Sierra. Along the June Lake Loop (Hwy. 158, accessible from Hwy. 395 south of Lee Vining), you get the full-fledged alpine experience. Naturally, the loop’s namesake June Lake has the most recreation along its shores. You can take a hike, go fish, or even plan to stay overnight at one of the campgrounds.
Next you’ll come to Gull Lake, then Silver Lake—two other popular boating and angling waterways. As you drive north on the loop, stop at least once to admire Reversed Peak, a 9,500-foot Sierra peak.
Finally, you’ll come to Grant Lake. No resorts cluster here, nor will you find any major trailheads. What you will find are a boat launch and some spectacular alpine trout fishing.
Finally, take a break at the Mono Craters Monument before heading back out to Highway 395 toward Lee Vining or Mammoth Mountain [1].
