For a smaller and less crowded South Shore ski experience, check out Sierra-at-Tahoe (1111 Sierra-at-Tahoe Rd., Twin Bridges, 530/659-7453, http://sierraattahoe.com [1], weekdays 9 a.m.–4 p.m., weekends 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m., adults $55–65, youth $45–55, children $14–16). Sierra-at-Tahoe offers plenty of long, sweeping advanced runs, as well as many fun intermediate tracks.
The many beginners’ green slopes run right down the middle of the mountain, all the way from the top. Take the Tahoe King or Grandview Express quad chairs or the Nob Hill double chair to the upper greens, or the Rock Garden or Easy Rider Express to stay lower on the mountain.
It’s all black diamonds on the east side of the big quads, and mostly blues with a few black diamonds for spice in the west, coming off the West Bowl Express quad or the Puma triple chair. A few more beginning and intermediate runs flow down the back of the mountain.
For a nice, hot cup of coffee and a hearty meal, ski down either to the Base Lodge or the Baja Grill. Some skiers think Sierra-at-Tahoe is the best-kept secret in the area.
