If you’re planning in advance to visit Rutherford Hill (200 Rutherford Hill Rd., Rutherford, 707/963-1871, www.rutherfordhill.com [1], daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m., $15), book a spot on the winery and cave tour. The winery is pretty standard for a Napa [2] facility, but the caves impress even jaded wine lovers.
Dug back into the hillside, Rutherford’s caves provide a natural temperature-controlled space in which to age their array of wines, mostly hearty reds. (If you’re looking for a place to hold a special dinner or mid-sized event, Rutherford rents space in their caves.)
Contrary to the myth perpetuated by the movie Sideways, Rutherford produces a fine Merlot, as well as rich Cabernet Sauvignons and other tasty varietals.
