It seemed unlikely that anything worthy could possibly replace Trader Vic’s, but Le Colonial (20 Cosmo Pl., 415/931-3600, www.lecolonialsf.com [1], Sun.–Wed. 5:30 p.m.–10 p.m., Thurs.–Sat. 5:30–11 p.m., $25–40) does it. This Vietnamese-fusion hot spot takes pride in its tiki lounge, which features local DJs spinning Thursday–Saturday 4:30 p.m.–2 a.m. Cocktails are big and tropical, and pay proper homage to the building’s illustrious former occupant. But don’t skip the food; the lush French-Vietnamese fare comes family-style and blends flavors in a way that seems just perfect for San Francisco [2].
You’ll find all of Southeast Asia in the food at E&O Trading Company (314 Sutter St., 415/693-0303, www.eotrading.com [3], lunch Mon.–Sat 11:30 a.m.–5 p.m., dinner Mon.–Thurs. 5–10 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 5–11 p.m., Sun. 5–9:30 p.m.). This fusion grill serves up Indian flatbreads with Vietnamese small plates mixed in with big grilled dishes. Enjoy the wine list and full bar, or consider ordering takeout. Reservations are recommended.
