Entertainment and Events

For some Stanley [1] residents, nightly entertainment involves watching videos at home, but there’s always a pub crawl starting at the relatively low-key Victory Bar (1-A Philomel St., tel. 21199, www.victorybar.com [2]), commonly known as “the Vic.”

One block north, the Globe Tavern (Crozier Place and Philomel St., tel. 22703) is the capital’s traditional and, in some ways, more colorful watering hole. To the west, Deano’s Bar (40 John St., tel. 21296) and the Rose Bar (1 Brisbane Rd., tel. 21067) are additional options.

Live music with local bands, and occasional visitors, takes place in the pubs and on occasion in Stanley Town Hall [3]. Occasionally, after the pubs close, Stanley’s Fighting Pig Band (www.fightingpigband.com [4]) hosts a show and dance at its tobacco-free home sty The Trough, a remodeled assemblage of eight military Portakabins on Stanley Airport Road. Admission costs £3, and since it has no liquor license, it’s BYOB only.

New Year’s Day is an occasion for the annual Sea Cadets Raft Race, for which competitors build their own vessels. Under the sponsorship of the Falkland Islands Horticultural Society, March’s Horticultural Show is a competitive event which, at the end of the day, finishes with an auction of produce and baked goods from Stanley [1] and the camp [5].

August’s Town Hall Crafts Fair showcases the efforts of leatherworkers (whose bridles, stirrups, and other gear resemble those of early gauchos), weavers, artists, and photographers.

On Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, Stanley Sports features horse racing (betting is legal), footraces, and gymkhana competitions. Camp Sports takes place in late February or early March, after the end of shearing, at venues such as Goose Green (East Falkland [6]) and Port Howard or Fox Bay (West Falklands [7]).
