Local residents and visitors have bonded together to provide help for Oaxaca’s street children and poor single-parent families. Their Centro de Esperanza Infantile (formerly Grassroots) organization (Crespo 308, tel. 951/501-1069, streetchildren [at] spersaoaxaca [dot] com [dot] mx, www.oaxacastreetchildrengrassroots.org [1] or www.shinealight.org/CEI.html [2], 9 a.m.–1 p.m. and 4–7 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Sat.) operates cooperatively out of its center about four blocks north, three blocks west of the zócalo.
The all-volunteer organization raises money for food, schoolbooks and uniforms, housing, foster care, and much more for homeless children and destitute single mothers and their children. They welcome donations and volunteers, and visitors are always welcome.
Outside of Oaxaca, you can send contributions: Mail checks, addressed and written to the order of Oaxaca Street Children Grassroots, to Donations, P.O. Box 29226, Brooklyn Center, MN 55429.
