Visitors will most certainly have some encounters with insects, but many parts of Panama [1] are not nearly as buggy as one might think. The mosquito population, for instance, is strictly controlled because of the risk of disease.
But the variety of insects found on the isthmus is staggering. It’s estimated there are at least 10,000 species of beetles alone.
Most visitors would just as soon not encounter some of these insects, such as chiggers, bullet and army ants, giant cockroaches, Africanized bees, and stinging centipedes, not to mention the vast array of impressive arachnids, which include such creepy-crawlies as scorpions, tarantulas, and the stunning golden orb spider.
But Panama is home to plenty of less-intimidating little creatures, such as 16,000 species of butterflies. One of the most spectacular of these is the huge and luminous blue morpho, which can often be seen floating slowly through the forest canopy.
