Camping is best done in the dry season, as it can get awfully wet and mucky around here in the rainy season. The nicest and safest place to camp is Oasis Surf Camp (tel. 202-1022, cell 6588-7077, www.oasissurfcamp.com [1], US$5 pp) on Playa Estero. Campers can also pitch a tent for free on the beach, but I’d suggest working out a deal at one of the surfing camps or with a farmer to camp on their land.
Maybe it’s just me, but it doesn’t always feel safe to camp on this beach, at least near the village itself. Some of the characters who hang out around there give off bad vibes. Part of it is just the usual surf territorialism, but there’s also a hint of a real maleante (rough translation: hooligan) air about some of them.
