Nicaragua [1]’s population is fast approaching six million, about a full third of whom live in Managua [2]. Nicaragua is both the least populous Central American nation and the fastest growing, at just over 3 percent annually.
At this rate, the country’s strained resources will have to support between 9 and 12 million people by the year 2030.
In addition, well over a million Nicaraguans live outside of the country, particularly in Costa Rica (679,000) and the United States (500,000), not to mention thousands more living in Mexico and other Central American nations.
