There are gift shops, craft stalls, street vendors, art shops, and galleries lining Front Street near Tourism Village, as well as just south of the Swing Bridge.
In the Fort George area [1], check out the National Handicrafts Center (Memorial Park, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Sat.). It’s near the Radisson.
There is a flea market at the Catholic Church on North Front Street on Saturdays at 7 a.m.
Seek out the Mennonite Furniture Market (47 N. Front St., open Friday and Saturday during daylight hours); they won’t arrange shipping, but you can get nice, basic handmade wooden furniture for reasonable prices.
At the Traveller’s Liquors Heritage Center (Northern Highway mile 2.5, tel. 501/223-2855, www.onebarrelrum.com [2], 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Fri., bar open till midnight on weekends), a couple miles north on the Northern Highway, Belize’s premier rum producer offers a fun stop on your way in or out of town. Ask about the “vintage edition rum” to bring home some premium spirits.
The Heritage Center consists of a historical display, a selection of their many products at bargain prices, an open-air bar and restaurant, and most importantly, a tasting bar where you can sample all 27 varieties of Traveller’s Liquors rum.
