Housed in the old city jail (Her Majesty’s Prison was built in 1857 and served as the nation’s only prison until the 1990s), the small but worthwhile Museum of Belize (8 Gabourel Ln., tel. 501/223-4524, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Thurs., till 4 p.m. on Fri., US$5) includes city history artifacts, indigenous relics, and rotating displays, such as Insects of Belize, Maya Jade, and Pirates of Belize. Philatelists and bottle collectors will love the 150 years of stamps and bottles on display.
