The narrow streets of Villahermosa [1]'s original town center, which are brick-paved and closed to traffic, are referred to as the Zona Remodelada or the Zona Luz. The tree-lined streets bring you past bustling shops and tiny cafés packed with locals.
Just south of the Zona Luz, the Plaza de Armas is a pretty park surrounded by government buildings on a slight rise above the zone. It boasts the Puente de Solidaridad—a footbridge that spans the Río Grijalva and allows the residents of Colonia Las Gaviotas to cross to the town center.
Partway across the bridge, the Torre del Caballero (8 a.m.–5:30 p.m. daily, free) is a concrete lookout tower with a 211-step spiral staircase leading to a windy platform with fine views of the city and river.
