Spanish for “The Anthill,” El Hormiguero (8 a.m.–5 p.m. daily, US$2.75) is a remote site that few people visit.
Although only a few structures have been excavated, it is most notable for Structure II, a dramatic building with two tall towers flanking an enormous monster mouth doorway. From there, a path leads visitors directly to the Central Group where the partially excavated Structure V looms before visitors.
Located 22 kilometers (13 miles) south of Xpujil town [1], Hormiguero was, until recently, almost impossible to access without a heavy-duty four-wheel-drive vehicle and a lot of time. The road has improved significantly, and though it is still no autobahn, just about any car can get through as long as you go slowly and it hasn’t been raining.
