Sayil (8 a.m.–5 p.m., US$3) is even more spread out than Kabah [1], but the long leafy paths between monuments is part of the pleasure of visiting this site.
Archaeologists believe the area was settled as early as the 2nd or 3rd century A.D., though virtually all of its major structures were built in a short period between the end of the 8th century and middle of the 10th. Sayil’s population most likely peaked at around 10,000 people, with another 7,000 living in outlying areas.
Sayil is located just seven kilometers (4.4 miles) from Kabah; coming from Kabah on Highway 261, look for the well-marked left-hand turnoff.
