A classic Meridian experience, the salon familiar is a place where locals head for regional food, drink, and entertainment at reasonable prices. Performances typically include live music, comedy acts, and ballet folklórico. It’s a place where everyone is welcome and a party atmosphere rules. On weekends and during vacation periods, you’ll see lots of families inside.
The most popular salones downtown are: La Prosperidad (Calle 53 at Calle 56, 11:30 a.m.–8 p.m. daily, US$4–7)—a big, noisy, friendly place with a stage. Performances run daily 2 p.m.–7:30 p.m. While you enjoy the entertainment, try the Yucatecan botanas (appetizers) or one of the huge entrées, most of which are pork- or chicken-based; and El Nuevo Tucho (Calle 60 between Calles 55 and 57, tel. 999/928-2858, 11:30 a.m.–9:30 p.m. daily, US$5–10) with special performances from 4:30–7 p.m., and live music the rest of the night. While it’s a good introduction to regional food and entertainment, don’t expect much conversation at this place—the speakers blast away any possibility of interaction. In fact, pointing at the menu might be easier than trying to shout your order.
