At the view-edge of the lagoon behind the museum stands Mexcaltitán [1]’s first official tourist lodging, the Hotel Ruta Azteca (tel. 323/235-6020). More like a homey guesthouse than a hotel, it has an airy rear lagoon-view patio, perfect for reading and relaxing. Its four plain, tiled rooms with bath rent for about $18 d with fans, $25 d with air-conditioning. Except for the last week in June, reservations are not usually necessary. If you are unable to contact the hotel directly, call the town telephone operator (tel. 323/235-6077) and leave a message for the hotel.
On the town plaza opposite the church stands airy El Camarón seafood restaurant (although the sometimes-noisy restaurant/bar at the south-side dock has more and better food). A third option is the good Mariscos Kika (tel. 327/235-6054, noon–dusk daily) seafood restaurant, visible across the lagoon from the south-side dock. Reach it by hired (or the restaurant’s) boat. Its kid-friendly facilities include a pair of kiddie pools and a water slide.
