Chaparrí

Peru’s first private nature reserve, founded in 2001, Area de Conservación Privada Chaparrí (tel. 072/221-4092, www.chaparri.org [1]) is an extraordinary option for those interested in exploring a unique ecosystem.

The 34,000-hectare reserve of dry forest is administered by the local campesino community and funded by Peruvian photographer Heinz Plenge with the support of several Peruvian corporations and large environmental organizations.

The park’s goal is to reintroduce and preserve endangered species such as the pava aliblanca (white-winged turkey), el oso de anteojos (the spectacled bear), the guanaco (a camelid), and the Andean condor, the world’s largest flying bird.
