The Health Ministry did a sanitary inspection of all of Abancay [1]’s restaurants in 2003, and only the following three passed: The state-owned Hoteles y Turismo Abancay (Díaz Bárcenas 500, tel. 083/32-1017, 6:30 a.m.–10:30 p.m. daily, US$3–5) serves good salads and grilled meats in its dining room.

Mauri’s (Arenas 170, tel. 083/32-3042, 5 p.m.–12:30 a.m., US$2–4) is easily identifiable by its familiar golden arches sign and is popular for grilled meat and pollo a la brasa. It offers delivery.

Finally, Wachi (Lima 862, 8 a.m.–3 p.m. daily) has the best comida típica in town.

Other safe places that were not evaluated because they are somehow not considered restaurants include these spots: Focarela Pizza’s (Díaz Bárcenas 521, next to Hostal El Imperial, tel. 083/32-2036, 6 p.m.–midnight daily, US$3) serves above-average pizzas out of a wood-burning oven. Rumor has it that Pizza Napolitana, two blocks farther down the street, has better crust.

The best places for breakfast, cakes, and pies are Café Heladería Dulce y Salado (Arequipa 400, 8 a.m.–10 p.m.), Café Heladería Mundial (Arequipa 301, 8 a.m.–9:30 p.m.), and Cafetine (Arequipa one block from Hotel Flor de Amancaes).

The best supermarket is Comercial Karina (Arenas 156, 9 a.m.–11 p.m. daily).
