The standard Colca [1] mountain-bike route begins at Patapampa, at 4,950 meters, and drops into the Colca Valley at Chivay [2] at 3,650 meters. Bikers follow dirt roads along the north side of the river and cross the bridge to Yanque [3].
The third day would include the Cruz del Condór [4] and Maca [5], and end in Cabanaconde [6].
Cusipata (Jerusalén 408A, tel. 054/20-3966, www.cusipata.co [7]) can also design extraordinary routes in Cotahuasi [8] and the Valley of the Volcanoes [9]. Cusipata also rents bikes.
Another good option is Naturaleza Activa (Santa Catalina 211, tel. 054/959-822-436 or 958-681-486, naturactiva [at] yahoo [dot] com), which also offers more mellow biking trips around Arequipa’s countryside.
