From the Plaza de Armas [1], walk up Mantas one block to the Iglesia de la Merced (tel. 084/23-1821, 8 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 2–5:30 p.m. Mon.–Sat., US$2), which was completely rebuilt following the 1650 earthquake. Inside the church lie two conquistadores, a father and a son who were executed by the Spanish shortly after the conquest.
Diego de Almagro the Elder was hung after he rebelled against Francisco Pizarro’s authority, and his son, Diego de Almagro the Younger, was executed four years later for murdering Francisco Pizarro in revenge.
Hanging on the walls nearby the tombs are paintings by the 16th-century master Bernardo Bitti. The church’s elegant cloisters contain a small museum, which showcases a magnificent monstrance made of gold, silver, and precious stones.
