Themed bars can often veer into tacky territory, but the French-run Rhumerie Bounty has managed to avoid cliché. Known around town as “the pirate bar,” it has garnered popularity thanks to its galleon-style interior and selection of homemade rums.
Pull up a barrel stool and choose from a blackboard of hand-macerated flavored brews, including ginger, pineapple, and cinnamon, depending on what’s in season. Flavored bottles come with a bowl of crushed ice and miniature glasses. Rum cynics can choose from a small but plentiful menu of beers, soft drinks, and fruit smoothies.
The interior is completely clad in wood panels, with seafaring relics like fishing nets, bottles, and pirate hats knocking around for effect. If you can’t get a table, try the second branch at 47 Yongfu Lu in the Old French Concession.
