For a show you won’t find in New York or Chicago, check out Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, Washington’s avant-garde troupe that specializes in new works, quirky plays, and devilishly fun performances. Stagings have included A Girl’s Guide to Washington Politics from Second City and Charlie Ross’s hilarious One Man Lord of the Rings and One Man Star Wars.
On a more serious note, plays like The Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs, a one-man show by political activist Mike Daisey about the Apple CEO and the company’s impact on Chinese laborers, grip audiences as well, serving more as food for thought than entertainment.
Woolly Mammoth’s new digs, which the company moved into in 2005, are sophisticated: Concrete, polycarbonate, and metal surfaces define a bright cavernous space improbably located in an office building basement.
